Bruxism (Teeth Grinding)

Bruxism, or teeth grinding

smr 2018 00199f2

What is Bruxism?

Bruxism is the involuntary habitual grinding of the teeth, typically during sleep. This condition can affect both adults and children. Some people don’t display any symptoms, whilst others may experience headaches, jaw pain, tooth pain or migraines.

Because teeth grinding often occurs during sleep, you might be wondering ‘how do I find out if I grind my teeth?’ Many people are told by their loved ones that they grind their teeth, as it can be loud enough to be heard, but a tell-tale sign of bruxism could also be a constant dull headache or sore jaw.

  • Teeth grinding or clenching
  • Jaw muscle tightness
  • Earache
  • Headaches
  • Flattened or fractured teeth
  • Increased tooth sensitivity
  • Chronic facial claim

Treating Bruxism

Botulinum toxin has been shown to be extremely effective in the treatment of Bruxism, as it blocks the nerve impulses in the masseter muscle when injected that stimulate teeth grinding whilst sleeping. Just like regular botulinum toxin, this treatment is not a permanent solution, and a top-up is recommended after 6 months. This may vary for the individual person.
