Combat your acne

What causes acne?

Acne is a skin condition that affects many people and can really stump our confidence in everyday life. It’s important to know the causes in order to treat the condition.

Their are multiple factors to address to get down to the real cause of your acne. Everyone is different and the causes vary depending on each individual.

Stripping Your Skin

When you are suffering from breakouts, scrubbing and exfoliating the skin seems like the right thing to be doing right?

This is actually not helping at all. Our skin has a natural protection barrier on the surface which protects against elements like wind, cold and water and also making it harder for bacteria and other microbes to get into the skin. It is made up of natural oils, fatty acids, latic acid, amino acids and our skin’s own natural moisturising factors and is also slightly acidic.

If you’re using alkaline soaps or aggressive exfoliants you’re washing away this acid mantle causing that tight squeaky clean feeling after cleaning. This might feel like a good feeling but this means you’ve probably just stripped away your acid mantle which will increase your chances of skin damage and infection.

Skin Lacking Water

We’ve always been taught that it is key to stay hydrated in order to keep healthy. The same goes for our skin. Although internal consumption of water is great for the skin it is not enough. It is key to be providing the skin with vitamins, minerals, amino acids and essential fatty acids in order to improve and maintain the free water levels in the skin to achieve beautiful healthy skin.

When your free water levels are low in the skin this is when you can experience acne, breakouts and congestion. If you think of a glass of water, when you poor oil into the glass the oil will flow nice and freely on the surface. This is what we want to achieve with the skin but if your free water levels are low the oil will not flow freely, instead it will get clogged under the skin which is when you experience imperfections on the skin.

Hormones

Everyone will experience hormonal breakouts at some point in their life. It is most common in teenagers going through puberty but is also an issue for adults. It relates to a fluctuation of hormones within the body commonly caused by menstruation, polycystic ovarian syndrome, menopause and or increased androgen levels. These hormone fluctuations can increase overall skin inflammation, cause an irregular oil production in the pores, clogged skin cells in hair follicles and increase the production of acne-causing bacteria called Propionibacterium acne.

Digestive Health

Acne, facial redness, eczema, psoriasis, dry skin, and rosacea are all skin conditions which can have the same root cause, poor gut health and gut function. The gut is responsible for absorbing nutrients , housing both helpful and harmful bacteria and excreting waste. By making improvements to your digestive health it has been scientifically proven to improve skin health, immune function, mood and energy levels.
